These are just sample combinations to show that various codes may be used and are not meant to be prescriptive of courses that should/must be offered.
 
Year 2 - Grade 12 - Hospitality TFT4C - 4 credits - Semester 2 only

This course is a continuation of the grade 11 program. Although the grade 11 course TFT3C is not a Pre-requisite, it is strongly recommended that students complete this course before hand. This course focuses more intensely on each of the eight sectors of the tourism industry. Students explore various careers in this industry and learn the components which contribute to high-quality customer service. In addition, students gain practical, hands-on experience by working approx. 350 hours in a tourism co-op placement. This also prepares students to gain National Certification in a desired tourism job if they choose to pursue it.

Apprenticeship Co-op - various codes - 4 credits - Semester 2 only

This program is designed to make students aware of apprenticeship as a pathway to full-time, life long employment. Starting in grade 12 (mostly), students can explore career opportunities in the skilled professions. There are currently 6 different Apprenticeship Programs offered for the 2001-2002 school
year.

They include:

1 ) General Carpenter
2) Interior/Exterior Finisher
3) Network Cabling Specialist
4) Brick & Stone Mason
5) Automotive/Truck & Coach Technician
6) Cook

As a participant in an Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program, students will:

  • eam credits towards a high school diploma
  • register as an apprentice
  • accumulate hundreds of hours of hands-on experience
  • make connections with people that can be of assistance
  • earn while you learn' to help offset the cost of tools or training

In order to enroll in any of these courses, students must complete an application package which requires both Principal and Parental approval/consent. A committee of educators and employers will review these
applications. There are limited spaces in these programs. Consequently, only selected applicants will be interviewed. Acceptance is conditional upon a successful interview.

 
 
Apprenticeship Course Descriptions:

1) General Carpenter - t.b.a. coding - 4 credits

For this course, students learn from licensed carpenters at Local 27, a carpentry union. Students learn basic carpentry skills such as working with tools and reading blue punts as well as on the job health and safety concerns. After 2 Y2months of instruction and practise, students will then be placed and paid on a job site for the rest of the semester.

Pre-requisites:

  • have a passion and enthusiasm for carpentry
  • have some carpentry experience (school course/hobby/work)
  • complete application package
  • an up-to-date resume
  • appropriate Letter of Reference
  • successful interview
  • grade 12 student
 
 

2) Cook - Culinary Arts - t.b.a coding - 4 credits

For this course students learn in school (1 day/week), at a high end restaurant work placement (3 days/week - 8 hours/day) and at Humber College in the HRT Alliance Program (1 day/week). For their time at Humber College, students earn 1 college level credit as well as 4 in-school credits.

3) Network Cabling Specialist - t.b.a. coding - 4 credits

For this course, students must be willing to transfer to Don Bosco Catholic Secondary School for semester 2. Students will begin at Don Bosco for 3 weeks and then move to Humber College to participate in the college's Information Technology Program. In mid-May, students will be placed with an information technology firm for a co-op placement. Along with 4 in-school credits, students will earn I college level credit.

  • have a passion and enthusiasm for computers
  • some computer experience (school courses/hobby/work)
  • be in good academic standing
  • complete application package
  • an up-to-date resume
  • appropriate Letter of Reference
  • successful interview

4) Interior/Exterior Finisher - t.b.a. coding - 4 credits

In this course, students learn from skilled tradespersons how to do basic interior and exterior finishing. This includes dry walling, general carpentry, working with stucco-compound, installing fixtures and others skills. Students go to a training centre for three months where they practise these techniques hands-on. For the rest of the semester, students are paid to work at a co-op placement with member contractors.

  • have a passion and enthusiasm for renovation/building/construction
  • some experience (school course/work/hobby)
  • complete application package
  • an up-to-date resume
  • appropriate Letter of Reference

5) Brick and Stone Mason t.b.a. coding - 4 credits

In this course, students learn from skilled tradespersons how to work with brick and stone. Students go to a training centre for three months where they practise hands-on techniques. For the rest of the semester, students are paid to work at a co-op placement with member contractors.

6) Automotive or Truck and Coach Service Technician - 2 year program
Grade 1 1 - TTJ 3C - coding - 2 credits
Grade 12 - TrJ 4C - coding - 4 credits

Grade 11 - For this course, students must be willing to transfer for the afternoon only to Jean Vanier Catholic Secondary School for semester 2. After some pre-training at Jean Vanier Secondary, students travel to Ashtonbee Campus of Centennial College to learn skills and practises from licensed mechanics/instructors in the Automotive Technology Program. In mid - May, students work at either an auto dealership or garage gaining hands-on experience until the end of the semester. Students earn 2 in-school credits as well as 1 college level credit from Centennial College. If students successfully complete this course they are automatically enrolled in the grade 12 program.

Pre-requisites:

  • interest in automotive repair
  • some experience (school course/work /hobby)
  • an earned average of 75% (general/college bound level) OR 65%
    (advanced/college/university bound level)
  • complete application package

Grade 12 - This course is a continuation for the grade 11 program. Students must be willing to transfer to Jean Vanier Secondary School for semester 2. After some pre-training at Jean Vanier Secondary, students will again attend the Automotive Technology Program at the Ashtonbee Campus of Centennial College. There, students will continue to build their automotive skills In mid-May, students will begin their work placements at the same garage/dealership they worked at the previous year. Students will earn 4 in-school credits as well as 1 college level credit from Centennial College.
