Dramatic Arts - Advanced - ADAOA - O.A.C.

Through thematic exploration and the dramatic medium, students are given the opportunity to deepen their awareness of relevant moral issues. The complexity of these issues will be studied through experiencing, devising, and analyzing innovative theatre techniques and dramatic conventions. With Canadian issues as a focus, students will explore, interpret and communicate a variety of themes by experimenting with traditional dramatic genres such as docudrama and the one-act play. Evaluation is based on all aspects of daily course work, participation, attendance, drama projects, written assignments, one independent study unit and a final exam. Good writing skills are required to be successful. In addition, this course will include studying a period of the history of the theatre.

Pre-requisite: ADA2A and/or ADA4A
Highly Recommended: Successful completion of Grade 12 Advanced English (ENG4AO)

Attendance is vital in order to succeed in all of the above courses.

An incidental fee of $6.00 - $10.00 may be charged to cover the cost of viewing dramatic performances

 
 
Music

Music programs at St. Mary's Catholic Secondary School emphasize the performance of music at a level that strikes a balance between challenge and skill and is aimed at developing technique, creativity and imagination. Music can touch the soul in a powerful way. The music students have a unique opportunity to enhance their lives, bring joy to others, and give glory to God through musical studies and performances.

Instrumental Music - AMUOAO - O.A.C.

This course is designed for students who have achieved a high level of musical ability and have a good understanding of the fundamental of music. Students will be expected to play challenging music from the concert band repertoire as well as assume a leadership role in the St. Mary's C.S.S. Concert Band. A significant amount of the listening - and history component of this course is completed through independent study.

Pre-requisite: One Senior Division advanced level credit in music.

 
 

Vocal Music - AMUOAO - O.A.C.

This course is designed for students who have achieved a high level of singing ability and have a good understanding of the fundamental of music. Students will be expected to sing a challenging repertoire of choral music as well as assume a leadership role in the St. Mary's C.S.S. Liturgical Choir. A significant amount of the listening, history, and analysis component of this course is to be completed through independent study.

Prerequisite: One Senior Division advanced level credit in music.

 
 

Visual Arts - AVIOAO - O.A.C.

This course is intended for student planning to study at the university level.
Course time consists of:
a) 50% studio work where students develop a major portfolio of self-directed art work
b) 50% history component focusing on the major art history periods and art criticism
This course requires much out of class work and a mature approach by the student.

Studio Fee of $20 will be charged for art materials.
Pre-requisites: one senior Visual Arts course at the Advanced level

 
 
Business
 

Accounting - BACOAO - O.A.C.

This course is intended primarily for students who wish to pursue further studies at a university. The study of accounting at the OAC level will provide students with a better understanding of the business world providing an in-depth study of generally accepted accounting principles, financial-accounting procedures used by business and the analysis of financial data. The use of accounting as a decision making tool will be emphasized. Students will be required to purchase a workbook.
** A fee of $25.00 will be charged for workbooks.

Computer Science
 
Computer Science - DCCOAO - O.A.C.

This course will provide the student with the opportunity to work on a variety of problems reflecting the real world. The course is based on a series of case studies. Each case study will include several or all of the following objectives: analyzing problems, developing solutions validating solutions and communications. Students will develop their interpersonal skills by working with others in a group situation. They will also be allowed to be creative in their area of interest and use their talents and abilities to full capacity in using the computer to solve real-life problems.

Conflict and Social Pressure - ENG4AO - ADVANCED

This course focuses on students' attention on writing, reading and speaking The aim is to consolidate the literary and language skills attained thus far. In varied written assignments, students are encouraged to clarify, restructure, organize and revise their work effectively. Emphasis is placed on the relation of personal experience to the study of various literacy genres. Many opportunities to improve oral skills and build self-confidence are provided through discussions and oral presentations. Students are required to produce well-defended and thoroughly researched essays, as well as reading both widely and independently.

Conflict and Social Pressure - Grade 12 - ENG4B - BASIC

This course is designed to build students communication skills in their final year of secondary education before they enter the workplace or proceed to post-secondary study or training. Students will be expected to follow an independent reading program, but the main emphasis of in-class work will be on practical applications of English, such as letters of applications and resumes.

 
 

Getting Ready for College and the World of Work Grade 12 - ENG4G - GENERAL

Students are encouraged to differentiate more carefully between opinion and fact through the analysis of variety of literary genres and the media. This course aims to solidify the skills and concepts acquired by students in their study of language and literature thus far. Through a focus on skills, attitudes and knowledge essential to success in college programs, the course enhances student motivation and program relevance for college bound students. As an integral part of this course, students think critically about
themselves, their goals, their society and their relationships, from an explicitly Catholic perspective. Writing activities aim at improving coherence in student writing. Students in this course gain practical experience in writing and proofreading through their participation in publishing their school newspaper. Class participation, group work, oral presentations and independent reading are also required.

English Yearbook Journalism - EMD4Al - ADVANCED

Taken in conjunction with TGJ4A1, this course is meant to teach the skills of journalism, communication, and publishing. An integral part of the program is the preparation of the school yearbook, a hands-on experience which gives meaning to classroom theory. This classroom activity is closely related to the 'real world" challenges of meeting deadlines and producing a valuable product.

Language & Literature (OAC) - Advanced - ENGOA - ADVANCED

This course is required for university entrance. Students will study a variety of literary genres chosen, not only for their literary importance, but also as models for personal writing. They will examine usage, structure and style, and consider the audience, purpose and tone of the literature selections. Students will also complete an independent study project. However, it is strongly recommended that students successfully complete grade 12 Advanced English before attempting this course.

Writers Craft - EWCOAO - OAC

This course is a workshop designed for self-motivated students who enjoy writing, who wish to enhance their skills in critical thinking and further develop their writing skills and who seek to develop lifelong writing habits. About fifty percent of the time is spent on the writing process, creating various types of writing for different purposes and audiences. The course reading include selections chosen as appropriate resources, samples and models of the writer's craft for students to analyze and emulate in their own writing Students will demonstrate a mature level collaboration with their teacher and with other students by sharing many of the workshop responsibilities: planning and completing an independent study project, experimenting with language and literacy forms, tracking their progress in writing folders, and co-operating in a variety of other in-class activities. All students will write one formal examination.

Families in Canadian Society (OAC) Advanced - NFOOA

The purpose of this course is to allow students to study family processes and dynamics within the framework of the family life cycle. Students will begin to comprehend some of the reasons for the wide range of behaviours exhibited in families. They will also become familiar with the historical and cross-cultural roots of Canadian families and the ways in which they adapt to the needs of the individual, the family group and society.

World Issues - GWIOAO - O.A.C.

Why does the modem world seem to be so messed-up? Everyday we read about wars, over-population and hunger, environmental degradation and ozone depletion. Find out how we've gotten into this mess and examine some alternative solutions. Students taking this course must be prepared to do work at an OAC level.

This course will provide students with the sophisticated understanding and broad skills needed for full participation in society. Topics to be covered will include human rights and freedom, law and the world community and current issues in Canadian law. Students are expected to be prepared to accept the
challenges of an OAC level workload.

Canada in a North American Perspective - HCNOA - O.A.C.

An examination of problems in North American History from the arrival of the first Europeans to the present with discussion of the various interpretations of historians. Content emphasizes such themes as modem social and economic problems; Canadian federalism; the question of identity; British and American influences on Canada and the issue of separation in Quebec. Seminar discussion and historical writing skills are emphasized. Students are expected to do reading and writing at an OAC level.

Economics - HXEOA - O.A.C.

In this course students will examine current economic issues and develop the framework they will need to understand the economic goals of the Canadian economy. They will examine economic stability, growth, what constitutes a viable balance of payments, exchange rates and other economic concepts. Students are expected to be prepared to handle the challenge of OAC level material.

French - FSFOA - O.A.C.

This course consists of intense work in written and oral French. At the end of the course, students will be able to participate in conversation, understand the general meaning of radio and TV programs and write personal correspondence. Literature is an important part of this course thus, field trips to see plays will also be included.

This course consists of intense work in written and oral Polish. Difficult grammatical structures will be studied. Students will learn Polish poetry and they will study books by some popular Polish authors.

This course includes: an introduction to Portuguese poetry; reading books by some popular Portuguese authors; a study of Lusiadas by Camoes; difficult grammatical structures such as the subjunctive will be introduced.

Mathematics
 

Mathematics for Technology Grade 12 - MTT4G - General

This course shall pay particular attention to the consolidation of the computational and algebraic skills learned in the Grade 11 course and further developed in this course. Emphasis will be placed on mathematical symbolism as a clear means of communication and as a problem-solving device.

Topics covered in this course will include. Real Numbers, Powers and Radicals, Polynomials and Rational Expressions; Equations; Properties of Geometric Figures; Trigonometry; and Statistics.

MATHEMATICS OAC

In the Ontario Academic Courses in Mathematics students will make appropriate use of the direct proof, indirect proof, proof by listing all possible cases, disproof by counter example, and disproof by contradiction. Students in Algebra and Geometry should demonstrate an understanding of proof by mathematical induction.

The Calculus course should be taken by every student intending to enroll in a university.

The Algebra and Geometry course is appropriate for students who intend to study mathematics at the university level. Normally a student would treat this course as a complement to the Calculus course.

NOTE: Students should refer to current calendars of the universities of their choice for advice on the selection of appropriate Ontario Academic Courses in mathematics.

 
 
Algebra & Geometry - MAGOA - O.A.C.

The above is a course that will look at five main topics; Transformations and Matrices - translations; matrices and linear transformations; matrices and conic sections: Geometric Vectors - Vectors as directed line segments; application of vectors; linear combination of vectors: Cartesian Vectors - vectors as ordered pairs and ordered triples; vector equations of lines and planes; scalar equations of lines and planes: Complex Numbers: Mathematical Induction.

Calculus - MCAOA - O.A.C.

Calculus is a course that will look at three main areas: Limits and Derivative - Limits; simple derivatives; fundamental properties of derivatives; derivatives of trigonometric functions; derivatives of exponential and logarithmic functions. Applications of Derivatives - tangents; rate of change; extreme values; curve sketching Anti differentiation - solution of differential equations; application of differential equations; area.

  • Evaluation for all Physical and Health Education course is based largely on effort and participation.
 
Physical & Health Education - Bio scientific Approach - PPBOA - O.A.C.

This course includes a classroom study of the following units: human performance, growth and development, physical fitness, coaching and training, sport in society, and current trends in sport. In order to study these topics in depth, some classes will be conducted in the gym or outdoors. This course is recommended for any student interested in following health related careers at the post secondary level.
